Another summer anime 2010 just recently caught my attention when I was browsing through my usual direct download site. I found this anime with interesting title: “Highschool of The Dead” and mostly known as HOTD. Now, I thought this would be just another ghost story kind of anime and could I be more wrong wrong ?
The story is about two highschool students as the main protagonist named Takashi Komuro and Rei Miyamoto and how they survive in the world infected with an unknown disease/virus that can turn a person into an undead. Takashi, Rei and a group of students manage to survive the initial outbreak and continue on a journey to find out what is going on.
Now, if you think about it for a second, the story plot does sound familiar especially for my self since I am a fan of Resident Evil movies. For those who never watch Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Apocalypse or Resident Evil: Extinction, the story revolves Alice and Umbrella Corporation who creates the T-virus. Something happened one after another and it causes an outbreak throughout the world.
Another similar example would be 28 Days Later or 28 months later. An outbreak causes by a virus named ‘Rage’ in Britain which almost wiped the entire Britain population. Could it be that Highschool Of The Dead is derived from these two movies ?
I think this series looks promising when I watched it for the first couple minutes then I saw panty shot -_-. Every time I saw a panty shot, it serves as a sign that I should avoid the series, however, seeing that story plot is quite my liking, I’ll give it another try before judging further. Hopefully, they remove those panty shots ^^; (Hey, don’t hate me. I used to enjoy those panty shot but that time is already passed >.<)
Animation wise, I think I expect nothing less from Madhouse animation studio. The animation quality is really high especially the opening and ending. I can see a lot of work and time had gone into the making of its OP and ED or rather too much has gone into OP and ED ^^;;.

Eh, the fanservice did nothing for me as well, but then I’m a straight female. I can usually stomach it, but here it was as ostentatious as in an episode of Strike Witches or Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou.
HSotD seem alright, but way too “generic zombie show”. There doesn’t seem to be anything to it beyond the usual themes. That’s not a bad thing per se, because the last thing I’d want it to do is ruin a good story like a Will Smith movie, but it’s just not interesting enough to warrant my undivided attention.
The “highschool romance” angle was way too contrived for me to enjoy, because I couldn’t care less about the protagonists so far. Nothing like a wooden, unstable male lead in a love triangle to ruin your zombie show.
Valid points although I think that all zombie shows are pretty generic imo and sometimes that ‘generic’ can make an anime more enjoyable especially in my case. If you know any good zombie shows, please do make recommendations since my watched list is certainly lacking of zombie-theme anime.
I am assuming that you refer to ‘I am Legend’. I thought it’s pretty good. Maybe I am a little bias here since Will smith is my favourite actor. I’ve heard that the book is better.
Since we look at episode 1 only, I tend to give the ‘fan-service’ part another chance because I just happened to know some shows that have a lot of panty shots in the first episode only in order to attract viewers.
One example that comes to my head was Kiddy Grade. First episode of Kiddy Grade made me thinking it was another fan-service because panty shots are like everywhere. However, the subsequent episode changed my mind instantly and started to enjoy the show.
He got rid of his rival in the first episode. Lol. How convenient.
Nice start of the show. Don’t stop with panty shots pls. I’d be sad.
Fabrice´s last blog ..Panathinaiko Stadium
Yah he is lucky and all that ^^;;. The show starts in an interesting manner, although, it’s not enough to give ‘wtf’ moment like Gai Rei Zero
I’ve read the manga, and I finished watching episode 2 as well… honestly the fan service does kill it. You get caught up in the horror and tension then next thing you know the “Fan services” kicks in and just ruins a scene. Especially with the nurse. In all honesty after reading the manga I should have expected all this but I just wanted to see how well this story translate into an anime. Hopefully I won’t be as angry watching this anime as I was reading the manga. (cliche’ stupidity)
I am holding back from reading the manga because I want to enjoy the anime series and am worried that if I read the manga, I probably stop watching the anime XD.
I haven’t watched episode 2 yet but I can totally see from OP/ED that the nurse is a center of panty shots >.<
the story line is awesome, but like what everyone’s saying, the fanservice is too over powering. I watched the second episode, and it’s just so distracting. honestly, this show will do fine without it (or even less of it). i mean like that panty shot for example, the girl has fallen down and is being attacked by a zombie, but the camera is shot at her bum! The most annoying character is Saya at the moment, her “snooty-princess” attitude is just pathetic! When asked to help out she replies with a, “Why do I have to help? I’m a genius! Do it yourself!”. Even though her life’s at stake.
The fan service is only too over-powering but it also kills my excitement. One of the reasons I enjoy zombie movies is the adrenaline rush that I will experience while watching. I just love the feeling that makes me wanting to jump off from my chair when the protagonists suddenly are ambushed by zombies. Unfortunately, in this series, the panty shots totally ruin it
. However, I still keep my hope high that the creator will reduce the amount of panty shots in future episodes >.<
Fan service might be a little strong, but you have to have some fill-in in a series like this and if not fan service, then what. You already have the zombie hoarde scenes so you can’t use them too many times. You have to make it look semi-plausible that the teens will survive to the next episode. The HUMVEE was a great episode saver and got the teens to the other side of the river. I take it that the female island airport Sniper and the high school doctor/nurse are lovers based on the clues they’ve both dropped. The question is, of the two teens still stranded on the other side of the zombie blockade wire, which one did Rei just blurt her feelings out to. I guess we’ll find out next episode and two other important things. Will the use of nuclear missiles be used and which of the teens will be killed soon. The way the suspense and lack of understanding of their final outcomes will be the downfall of one or more soon. Great anime series. Too bad it hadn’t come out sooner. Then we’d all have it on DVD/Blu-Ray. Looking forward to the final episodes and if the ending is strong enough, maybe a second set of episodes of HIGH SCHOOL OF THE DEAD. A nice break between watching this and the film I’m working on. Madhouse does it again.Ciao everyone.
