Stardock announced The Gamer’s Bill of Rights a day before Penny Arcade Expo. It contains list of standards or guidelines that they hope to be followed by game developers/publishers in particular PC game developers. The document was aimed toward PC games because console games developers already have some standards set by Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony. The objective of The Gamer’s Bill of Rights is
to increase the confidence of consumers of the quality of PC games which in turn will lead to more sales and a better gaming experience.
For those who are wondering about Stardock, they are the maker of Sins of a Solar Empire game which is a hit game in 2008. I also briefly mentioned about Stardock in my last game article Yar!! a Game Developer talked to Pirates and how they view piracy differently than other game developers.
The Gamer’s Bill of Rights(source: Stardock’s website) :
- Gamers shall have the right to return games that don’t work with their computers for a full refund.
- Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state.
- Gamers shall have the right to expect meaningful updates after a game’s release.
- Gamers shall have the right to demand that download managers and updaters not force themselves to run or be forced to load in order to play a game.
- Gamers shall have the right to expect that the minimum requirements for a game will mean that the game will play adequately on that computer.
- Gamers shall have the right to expect that games won’t install hidden drivers or other potentially harmful software without their consent.
- Gamers shall have the right to re-download the latest versions of the games they own at any time.
- Gamers shall have the right to not be treated as potential criminals by developers or publishers.
- Gamers shall have the right to demand that a single-player game not force them to be connected to the Internet every time they wish to play.
- Gamers shall have the right that games which are installed to the hard drive shall not require a CD/DVD to remain in the drive to play.
Thoughts
The only problem that I already foresee is in the first one. I think there should be a time limit for this one otherwise people will abuse the loop hole and I know some people that will do this for sure unfortunately. Surely, it’s a good thing that there are developers out there thinking about gamers but this is only the beginning because the next step would be for others to follow this bill and it’s not going to be easy to do.
The rest of the rules are more related to DRM so if DRMs are removed from PC games, it will pretty much follow more than 50% of those rights. Easy , right? ^^ Creating the bill is easy but to follow them, can those companies do the same as what Stardock did ? The saying ‘Easier said than done’ fits perfectly in this situation ^^;;

A gaming law…that is new…
Well, with all this stuff about games affecting people and stuff, something like this was board to happen…
Still, these rights/laws are weird…
Rins last blog post..Last Day of Summer…
hopefully developers do not stop making games because of such laws. good and bad I guess…
some people just don’t like rules you know what I mean? they do want to make good stuffs but, this whole rule thingie.. ugh!
that image is sweet!
I like all of those ideas. The second one especially (can we make that a rule for console games too?) I’m so sick of playing super buggy unfinished games.
We try to rent most console games before we buy them nowadays since they are so hit or miss. I wish you could do the same for PC games. That’s probably just because I’m cheap though
@Rin: The intention is good but it will be hard to follow. Well.. we have to start from somewhere, right ? ^^.
@AC: Not really laws per say but more of a guideline on how to create a good game (PC wise). The whole idea is just to remove annoying DRM from PC games and Stardock already proved that with their hit game : Sins of a Solar Empire. I am going to buy the game just to support the company ^^.
@Delenn: The guidelines are aimed towards PC games but they can also be applied to console games. I think PC games are a lot more hit and miss hence why most people prefer to download them as a way to ‘rent’ it but people tend to ‘rent’ forever for free.
I think everyone can be/ is cheap because if there is a way to save you $$$, I don’t see why we shouldn’t do it in general (I don’t mean pirating stuff).
Kinda surprise that you encountered a lot of buggy console games because my experience so far with PS2 is great. Maybe because I rarely play console games these days ^^;;
lol, i agree with some of the “laws” but not all. the Gamers shall have the right to return games that don’t work with their computers for a full refund law is kind of dumb because on the box it says the certain specs need to play the game.

@otaku dan: The first rule is weak unless they add some restriction for full refund so yah I agree with you but we need to remember that there is a group of people that don’t understand the requirement listed on the box especially the video card requirement.
For me the video card requirements are a bit tricky for me. Though I can pretty much look at the graphics and have a decent idea if my comp. can handle it or not. I like the first rule, but with some exception like a time limit as was stated before.
These rules do not quite apply to me…well some. I am more of a console gamer anyway and a lot of more aimed towards PC gaming.
Kairus last blog post..High School Senior
@Kairu: Video card requirement is always tricky for everyone because it consists of minimal requirement and recommended requirement. I think that having minimal requirements is barely playable and you need to turn off a lot of ‘eye-candy’ settings in order to play.
Some rules apply to consoles but all of them are aimed towards PC games. At least for consoles, you can rent them before buying them to try them out.
Thats the second time I’ve seen this pic today.
Did you know theres a figure of it too?
